Having a few great student-friendly drinking spots to frequent is an essential part of surviving that uni slog. You know, those bars and pubs that are within strolling distance of your last lecture of the day, filled with familiar faces and cheap enough that you won’t blow too much of your measly student budget on one drinking session. Luckily, Sydney’s got plenty of top-notch uni pubs and student bars and we’ve rounded up the best. Time for a study break? We thought so!
This classic old-school boozer would make the perfect uni pub, even if it were more than a simple hop, step and jump from the USYD campus. The Royal’s got everything a thirsty, fun-seeking student needs – sports on the big screens, a lively Tuesday night trivia and a stack of great weekly food and drink specials ($10 steaks, anyone?). And you’ve got to love the $12 student jugs, on offer all day, every day.
The Rose is the kind of local gem that attracts punters of all ages, though its location down the street from USYD makes it a well-loved stomping ground for students especially. A cracker of a beer garden proves ideal for afternoon pints and pool competitions, while an array of weekly cheap eats will have you filling the tank for less. There’s also a winning selection of $6 drinks, on offer from noon each weekday.
Undoubtedly one of Sydney’s most iconic student bars, Sydney Uni’s Manning Bar is also a hugely popular live music venue, pulling a diverse line-up of artists to its stage each year. Swing by for a gig; take advantage of the solid program of weekly fun and specials during semester; or simply pop in to unwind with some post-lecture pints and a feast of fried chicken and burgers courtesy of Lucky’s kitchen.
Though primarily a backpackers bar, Scary Canary also has a place in every party-loving uni student’s heart, a winner for its midweek dance floor sessions and blissfully cheap drinks. Throw in some drag bingo, the odd silent disco and an always lively crowd, and you’ve got the perfect refuge from those boring textbooks. Students even score free entry and a complimentary drink to Wet Wednesday’s weekly festivities.
Equally popular with Sydney’s student contingent as with its visiting backpackers, Side Bar promises high-energy party times, every night of the week. There’s a swag of budget-friendly food specials that’ll fill your belly without breaking the bank, themed trivia nights and midweek parties aplenty, and loads of options for letting your hair down once the weekend’s rolled around. It’s open till 3am nightly, so you might want to avoid signing up for any early morning lectures.
For years, Kingsford’s Regent Hotel has been a UNSW student favourite – a destination for budget pub eats, midweek pool-playing sessions and weekend DJ sets. It’s got an upbeat vibe, a youthful energy and even a great Tuesday night trivia to fire up those brain cells. What’s more, you can join the Regent’s pizza club to take advantage of $15 pizzas, $4 slices and $5 beers and wines, whenever you visit.
Sitting right on UNSW’s Randwick campus, this student bar is a firm favourite for caffeine-fuelled cram sessions, post-lecture pints and everything in between. There’s Tuesday night trivia for that midweek brain boost, a solid collection of board games to play and all manner of student-friendly drink deals throughout the week. Head in for $10 cocktails each Monday, or a few live tunes and $17 jugs to round out your Friday.
